Anthem was recently the target of an external cyber attack. While there is no evidence that credit card or medical information was stolen, the breach affected almost 80 million Anthem members, with hackers gaining access to the healthcare company’s systems and personal member information.
Under the Anthem umbrella are various health plans and brands that were affected, including: Anthem Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Amerigroup, Caremore, Unicare, Healthlink, and DeCare.
The accessed information included past and present members’ names, birthdates, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, addresses, email addresses and income information. The significance of this breach lies in the fact that the stolen information is all hackers need to commit identity theft, opening the door for fraudulent transactions like filing tax returns and opening credit cards.
